Profile

Outline Activities

Cellulose, the main component of trees, and chitin, the main component of the exoskeleton (shell) of crustaceans, are biomass that is abundant on earth. These structural polysaccharides can be obtained as nanofibers while maintaining their crystalline structure. Furthermore, chemical modification of the crystal surface is possible in a regular manner. I am wondering if the chemical structure of these polysaccharide nanofibers and their rigid nanofiber morphology can mimic the extracellular matrices such as collagen and hyaluronic acid that surround the cells in our bodies. Therefore, I am studying these polysaccharide nanofibers as cell culture scaffolds. In fact, chemical modification of polysaccharide nanofibers has been shown to alter cell adhesion to substrates, proliferation, and cell function. We are also conducting research using mesenchymal stem cells, an important cell type in regenerative medicine.

Message

In the field of regenerative medicine, the cells themselves used for treatment are of course important, but the cell culture substrates used to increase and condition the cells while maintaining their original functions are also important. The possibility of using polysaccharide nanofibers obtained from wood and crustacean shells as a base material for cell culture is exciting, and I am working on this research with great excitement every day. Why don't you join us and enjoy research on new pharmaceutical applications from agricultural science?
