Mission & Core values

Mission Philosophy

The mission of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, is "By bringing together the wisdom learned from life, water, soil, forests, and the earth, and passing it on to the next generation, we will acheive the evolving agronomics that aims for the sustainable coexistence of mankind and the global environment." Through education and research on biological resources and the environment, international cooperation, and social cooperation, it aims to contribute to the stable supply of food and living materials, the conservation of the living environment, and the health and welfare of mankind. To this end, the four pillars of our research are (1) the new field of agri-life science, which aims at elucidating, utilizing, and creating biological functions on the basis of the rapid development of life science research; (2) the field of environmental science, which aims at building sustainable biologically harmonious and material-cyclical biological production and rural space systems that take biodiversity into consideration from the perspective of global environmental conservation; (3) the field of international agri-food systems, including biological resources, biological use, environmental conservation, and rural development, focusing on potential food productivity in the Asian monsoon region from the perspective of increasing food productivity in the medium to long term; and (4) the field of food science, which promotes the functionality and safety of food and the construction of reliable food supply systems based on social needs for food safety and security.

Aims

  1. To achieve the goals of the new field of agricultural and life sciences, we will conduct research on the elucidation, utilization, and creation of biological functions and their systems in collaboration with the Bio-Architecture Center; and promote industry-academia-government collaboration based on such research. In the mid to long-term, we aim to establish a new education and research organization consisting of the Bio-Architecture Center, Institute of Genetic Resources, Material Management Center; and related fields of our institute.
  2. To achieve the goals in the environmental science area, the Institute will participate in the university-wide Research Center for Bioproduction and Biodiversity (tentative name) and vigorously promote its research, while developing cross-divisional research on the functions of natural circulation, biodiversity conservation, and land conservation in the watershed area as a site for biological production.
  3. To achieve the goals in the Asian area, we plan to promote research collaboration with the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Agricultural Demarcation and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and establish a Japan-China Research Exchange Center for Agricultural Resources and Environment (tentative name). Furthermore, we will promote the joint research project "Asian Rural Development Theory" with the University of Hohenheim, Germany, and promote collaborative cooperation with the Center for Tropical Agricultural Research, the Center for Asian Policy Studies, and the Korean Research Center.
  4. To achieve the goals in the area of food science, we will promote interdisciplinary research projects centered on the "Food Safety and Healthy Lifestyles" research core, and promote the distribution of safe food and clarification of its functionality based on the local community in collaboration with local governments and agricultural organizations. Furthermore, through academic research exchange agreements with the Kyushu-Okinawa Agricultural Research Center; Fukuoka Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Experiment and Research Institute; and Oita Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Center; the research seeds owned by the institute will be put to practical use.
