“Studies on biological characteristics of entomopathogenic microsporidians”
“Studies of entomopathogenic protozoan parasites”
“Studies of insect cell cultures”

Profile

Outline Activities

Outline of research:
Main research themes of our laboratory are microbial control of insect pests, characterization of entomopathogenic microorganisms, mechanism of microbial infection in insects, defense reaction of insects against pathogens, and studies of invertebrate cell culture. Among them, I concentrate especially on microsporidian and protozoan infection in insect pests and beneficial insects and studies of lepidopteran insect cell culture:
1. Studies on infection and development of entomopathogenic microsporidians as microbial control agents using insect cell cultures.
2. Studies on infection of microsporidians in natural population of lepidopteran insects and their effects on the host ecosystems.
3. Studies on biological characteristics of the protozoan parasites isolated from various insect species aiming to utilize them as microbial control agents and/or to protect beneficial insects.
4. Establishment of insect cell lines having particular characteristics to utilize them for insect pathology and microbial control.

Outline of education:
1. Lectures and tutorials of Insect Pathology and Microbial Control mainly for the graduate students.
2. English lectures of Microbiology, Insect Pathology and Microbial Control for the undergraduate and the graduate students in International Program.
3. Lecture of Agriculture and Microorganisms for the Kikan Education.

Message

Although entomopathogenic microsporidians and protozoa are extremely minor ones as microbial control agents, many characteristics of them remain unknown. I continue to diligently research on such microorganisms as having a lot of potential.
