Marine Resource Chemistry

The laboratory of Marine Resource Chemistry focuses on research in two main areas: "advanced utilization of marine bioresources (marine biotechnology)" and "metabolism of carbohydrates and sphingolipids and their biological functions”. Currently, we are mainly focuses on “the elucidation of the biosynthesis of highly unsaturated fatty acids and complex lipids in the marine microorganism Thraustochytrids”, and “the structure, function, and application of sphingolipid and glycolipid metabolizing enzymes”.

Research Interests

We have been studying on the elucidation of the structure and biological functions of enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids in marine organisms. Recently, we have been focusing on elucidating the overall metabolic mechanisms of highly unsaturated fatty acids and sphingolipids based on draft genome analysis of Thraustochytrids and on obtaining metabolic mutant strains by modifying them. Thraustochytrids are marine microorganisms that are attracting attention as a source for the production of pharmaceuticals, supplements, and biofuels. We are also actively working on the discovery and utilization of synthetic enzymes for glycosphingolipids derived from marine bacteria. We believe that our research will contribute to solving various health and energy issues facing human beings in this century.
