Biomaterial Design

Learning from, Utilizing, and Surpassing Living Things!

Under the slogan "Learning from, Utilizing, and Surpassing Living Things!", we aim to design environmentally-friendly fabrication processes using bio-based materials. We are exploring unique nano- and micro-technologies to manipulate interfacial interactions, and the correlation between the resulting three-dimensional structures and the induced properties.

Research Interests

1. Fabrication of new particle materials by interfacial fusion using bio-nanofibers
2. Surface chemical modification of cellulose nanomaterials by green process
3. Structural and functional design of layered cellulosic materials

The structures created by living organisms exhibit excellent properties, which can be attributed to the hierarchical structure of specific organic (or inorganic) materials (building blocks) assembled and organized in a specific pattern. Such knowledge on the correlation between “structure” and “function” is a good guidepost for manufacturing materials. In the Biomaterial Design Laboratory, we aim to demonstrate the unique properties of bio-based materials and their expression mechanisms as materials, and to propose design processes for this purpose. Thus, we focus on understanding and controlling the surface/interface structure and properties of cellulose and other bio-based materials.
