Since a long time ago , people have skillfully used polymers produced by living organisms as materials. Typical polymers include cellulose, the most abundant organic compound on earth, and chitin, the main component of the outer skin of insects and crustaceans. Other useful polysaccharides are obtained from a wide variety of organisms. Protein fibers such as silk are also important macromolecular materials. These "resource polymers" form nano-sized microfibers and molecular aggregates from single molecules, which then come together to form larger micro-sized structures. This is called hierarchical structure formation, which is the most important concept in the study of resource polymers. Based on this concept, our laboratory conducts research ranging from basic research on "how molecules assemble" to advanced research on "construction of structures by controlling the assembly state of molecules," with the aim of creating functional materials.
