Solving recent social problems related to insects

Our laboratory aims to transform business models using digitalization technology. We are working on 1) automating insect species identification, 2) adding value to insect resources by digitizing specimen data, 3) assessing insect diversity using digital transformation, and 4) promoting digital transformation through collaboration with fields related to insect science.

Research Interests

As a social issue that can be solved in the short term, we aim to enable rapid and appropriate control by automating the prediction of outbreaks, which is important for integrated pest management of stable flies, which cause social losses by mechanically transmitting the bovine infectious lymphoma virus in cattle and causing strong stress to cattle, and blow flies, which are likely to mechanically transmit highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, using object detection technology based on deep learning.
As a social issue that should be solved in the long term, we aim to estimate the potential distribution range from collecting data obtained from Kyushu University's collection of approximately 3 million insect specimens. Furthermore, we will predict how biodiversity will change depending on a climate change model. We also aim to develop insect taxonomy by building 3D models of specimens and utilizing unsupervised classification learning and heat maps.
