As part of the Fukuoka Bio-community Project, Kyushu University has begun research to develop prevention technology for white root rot of Para rubber tree in collaboration with Bridgestone Corporation (hereafter, Bridgestone) and Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (hereafter, BRIN), with the aim of contributing to increased productivity in natural rubber plantations.

Reducing the risk of disease in Para rubber trees is directly linked to the sustainable and stable supply of natural rubber. In particular, the white root rot disease in Para rubber trees is a serious disease that has a significant impact on the yield of natural rubber, and the damage is increasing while effective countermeasures have not been established. In this research project, we aim to develop innovative technology to prevent root rot disease and put it into practical use.

Fukuoka Bio Community

This is one of the regional bio-communities certified based on the "Bio-Strategy" promoted by the Cabinet Office. It develops bio-related initiatives tailored to the characteristics of the region, with Kurume Research Park serving as the secretariat. Fukuoka Prefecture and Kurume City collaborate to create new industries and bio-ventures based on biotechnology, aiming to attract bio-related companies and research institutions.

Initiation of a New Joint Research Project

Bridgestone, a company founded in Kurume City with production bases in the city, has placed sustainability at the core of its management and has been working to build a foundation for sustainable value creation. Kyushu University has previously conducted joint research with Bridgestone, contributing to solving challenges towards realizing their shared vision. As part of the Fukuoka Bio-Community project, a new joint research project involving Kyushu University, Bridgestone, and BRIN is set to begin, which is expected to significantly contribute to the sustainable production of natural rubber.
