[Topics] Short-term program for overseas students "International Agricultural Science Program 2024: Summer Course on Tropical Forest and Climate Change @ Indonesia
Continuing from last year, the Global Gateway Office, School of Agriculture of Kyushu University conducted a short-term program for sending overseas students to the Republic of Indonesia. This year, 12 students participated for 21 days from August 10, 2024 (Sat.) to August 30, 2024 (Fri.), led by Associate Professor FUJIWARA Takahiro (Forest Policy).
Details of Implementation
From August 12 to August 26, they participated in "Forestry Summer Course 2024: Tropical Forest Development Toward Carbon Neutrality and SDGs" organized by the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University. Gadjah Mada University is a top-ranked national university in Yogyakarta, and concluded a university-wide academic and student exchange agreement with Kyushu University in 2005. The summer course was run by student committee members of the International Forestry Students' Association (IFSA) under the responsibility of the department's faculty. This year's summer course included students from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Gambia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Indonesia. In addition to undergraduate lectures, practical training in the training forest, and off-campus cultural training, students stayed in the same accommodations and ate and slept together while deepening exchanges. All participating Kyushu University students completed the 135-hour (3 credit hours) summer course curriculum and received a certificate of completion.
From August 27 to August 28, they visited Bantar Gebang Final Landfill (Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia), the largest outdoor waste disposal site in Southeast Asia, JICA Indonesia (Jakarta), organization for international cooperation, and CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research), an international research institute based in Bogor, Indonesia, as part of Kyushu University's own program. The group also visited CIFOR (Center for International Forestry Research), an international research institute on tropical forests, headquartered in Bogor, Indonesia. They also interacted with Japanese alumni of Kyushu University in Indonesia.
Even after returning to Japan, students continue to interact with each other across borders. Throughout the entire program, the participating students' awareness of international exchange and study abroad has increased, and their future activities are highly anticipated. The Global Gateway Office, School of Agriculture will continue to promote such international exchange activities and plan various programs in the future.
