[Topics] Professor Fumihiko Tanaka receives the Fuji Seal Foundation Award
Professor Fumihiko Tanaka of the Department of Agro-environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, received the Fuji Seal Foundation Award from the Fuji Seal Foundation. The award recognized his research achievement, "Development of green coating packaging materials for fruits and vegetables using naturally derived carbon dots."
About the Fuji Seal Foundation Award
The Fuji Seal Foundation conducts a research grant program to support academic research in the field of packaging and promote studies that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. The Fuji Seal Foundation Award is presented to researchers who have achieved outstanding results through research projects supported by the foundation's grant program.
Research Overview
In recent years, there has been a growing global demand for environmentally friendly packaging technologies that can reduce food loss and minimize environmental impacts.
In this study, Professor Tanaka and his colleagues developed environmentally sustainable coating packaging materials for fresh fruits and vegetables using naturally derived carbon dots, a type of nanomaterial. The packaging technology utilizes naturally sourced components and is expected to extend the shelf life of fresh produce and suppress quality deterioration during distribution. The research was highly commended for its potential contributions to sustainable cold chain systems and the reduction of food loss.
The research findings were published in Food Research International and have also been widely featured by media outlets in Japan and abroad.
Professor Tanaka specializes in postharvest engineering and conducts research on quality preservation, safety enhancement, and the development of efficient distribution systems for agricultural products and food. In particular, he focuses on advancing agricultural distribution systems through packaging technologies, quality evaluation methods, and numerical simulations, thereby contributing to the reduction of food loss and the realization of sustainable food supply systems.
