[Obituary] Prof. Vo Tong Xuan, Honorary Chancellor of Nam Can Tho University, Vietnam, passed away.
Dr. Vo Tong Xuan, who completed the doctoral program of the Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyushu Univeristy, in 1975 and later served as the Honorary Chancellor of Nam Can Tho University, Vietnam, passed away on August 19. He was 83 years old. After returning to Vietnam with a doctorate in agriculture, Dr. Xuan worked on research of Mekong Delta agriculture at Can Tho University. He has been deeply respected by the Vietnamese people as one of the scientists who made the greatest contribution to the development of Vietnamese agriculture, and was awarded the Magsaysay Prize, the Nobel Prize of Asia, in 1993.(Details)
It is still fresh in our minds that he attended the Centennial Celebration of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu Univeristy, held at the Ito Campus in October 2019, where he delivered a keynote speech entitled "Sustainable Development of Asian Agriculture and Kyushu University". Furthermore, at the research presentations by international students held following the ceremony, he gave warm encouragement to the students, and we were deeply impressed by his passion for research and human resource development.
The Graduate School of Agricultural Science is very proud to have such a distinguished graduate as Prof. Vo Tong Xuan. We sincerely pray for the repose of Dr. Xuan's soul.
